Rico is from Puerto Rico, hence his name. He moved from New
York to Santa Ana as a kid, and got beat up every day because
of his accent. A Samoan gang (the Hoodlums) “jumped him in” –
beating him up in order to let him in the gang – because he had
“island blood” like they did. He was 13 years old at the time.
Sheryle also did time in jail – but not prison – and she she was on
probation, not parole. Because she was Italian she could be in
any gang; and so she jumped from gang to gang. They liked her
because she loved to fight, and was good at it.
Two months after Rico and Sheryle met, they asked me to
photograph their wedding. The other parolees threw them a party,
and a group of us went to the old Santa Ana courthouse.
They currently live in a van with their TV and a pit bull named “Felon.”
Rico treats me like a brother.
