“Mr. Patrick, I’ll do anything you want for money.” That’s how
desperate Tisha’s situation was when she entered the studio. She
was deathly afraid of the street, and was willing to do whatever I
wanted to get the money for a hotel room.
The empty teardrop tattoo she wears can mean that a person has
done at least a year of time. Or it can also mean they’ve killed
someone. I don’t know why Tisha was in the system.
I gave her $20 on the promise that she’d come back next week for
her portrait. Like the rest of the people I’d met on “parolee road,”
she was true to her word, sweet, kind and returned the following
week for the image here. Four years after the portrait, I was helping a non-profit as we handed out groceries to the "motel people." Tisha was yelling my name and came running up to me. She wanted to know if I had made any money from her portrait, she still needed money for that motel room.
